As we ended the last decade we were collating/archiving assets from the LAMP site and think it important to recognise the people that made LAMP the Australian icon in effective emerging media development.

Many of the mentors and participants were beginning their own journey on these workshops and residentials and are now leading the industry in Australia and abroad. We hope these ‘retrospective’ posts serve as a record for that which follows LAMP.

Over half of all the LAMP projects are in or have been produced to audiences now. üBERgroover.tv was a project that came into our 4th residential on Milson’s Island in 2006 and we have just heard from ex-AFTRS student Tina Lymberis, it’s driving force, of the official launch and plans to take on the world. Here is the media release

Electronic Engineer Tina Lymberis trades in the circuit board for a camera and microphone. After 12 years of gruelling study and work in fields she had no interest in, Tina found her calling in television production. This was cemented once accepted into the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) in 2006. Her AFTRS lecturer, Louise Clarke says: “Combine an ideas powerhouse with the latest knowledge in TV training, add a generous splash of boundless enthusiasm and you have Tina Lymberis: a recipe for success.”

Working as the Head of Video Production with iPRIME through 2007, Tina had a platform to leverage her many years of management experience and delve into the world of online production. Coupled with her passion and enthusiasm for dance, the only logical path was to produce üBERgroover.tv. iPRIME CEO, Tony Surtees affirms: “Really great media finds a way to engage across cultures and connect people…ü̈BERgroover.tv does that by reaching that something in all of us which really “connects” with our emotions. It curls the corner of your mouth, tugs at your heart and brings a tap to your toes. It’s music, it’s community, it’s tribal.”

The first season starts 6pm, 25 June 2008 and consists of 20 Australian made webisodes (each four to six minutes in duration) released weekly via http://www.ubergroover.tv. The show includes everyday people sharing their stories and favourite dance moves. Having grown up in a Greek-Australian household, Tina felt that “Australians need dances that connect them to the diverse constituents of their culture”.

Audiences can create grooves that represent modern Australian culture through “groovemaker”, a tool which incorporates the latest online interactive technology. It allows anyone to combine dance-moves and music, using their web browser, to choreograph their own routines. Gary Hayes, Director of LAMP declares: “ü̈BERgroover.tv is a good example of where collaborative entertainment is heading. It is about community created content in perfect synergy with the intention of the original creators – it is also a great deal of fun! LAMP is delighted with this launch”.

“üBERgroover.tv fuses user created content with professional production values and interactive tools to provide immersive entertainment; a perfect recipe, considering viewers are getting tired of watching stand-alone amateur content, but still wanting to show themselves off”, concludes Ms Lymberis. “Viewers hold the future of propelling Australian dance culture in the click of their mouse.”

LAMP Lab: July 2006
Target platforms: Broadband PC, cards, DVD and mobile
Project description: Designed as a cross media and cross platform experience for primary school aged children, ‘Totemon’ is an interactive locative and online game, a dvd game, and has a trading card, quest element. Informed by Aboriginal culture, it is an immerse learning environment, the user finding stuff about Australia’s unique and special places, people, plants and animals, totems and tucker.

Tagline: “An interactive virtual clubhouse community exclusive to girls aged 10 to 14. Users gain right of entry by completing an initiation game, ‘MIA’. The Secret Girls’ Club empowers young girls as they learn, share and play.”
LAMP Lab: July 2006

Project description: The Secret Girls Club is an ongoing, online space exclusively for girls, aged 10-14 years. It’s hip and cool. A space where they come to interact, share and learn from their peers about growing up. ‘Missing Mia’ is part one (initiation) of the Secret Girls Club. Users follow narrative storylines and hints left by the four fictional characters (who ‘founded’ the SGC) to play the first alternative reality game, ‘Missing Mia’.
The users become the private investigator, the councillor and the main character’s best friend. They are empowered and transformed by the tools of the multimodal game. They invest themselves by sharing their own content, performing task puzzles and by solving personal issues that all young girls have.

Ultimately, they realise they are special in their own right as they utilise their strongest skills in order to help the main character back home, to the Secret Girls Club.

Once they have solved each ‘Mia’ issue, i.e. completed a level, and win Mia back they are entitled to gain access to the Secret Girls Club VIP area and win prizes, as well as gain their personalised, exclusive licence to participate with real girls in the online community space.

Project description: Getinthecar.com.au hosts the wonderful and hilarious world of me, Monni Log and all my alter egos who are hell bent on driving you to humorous enlightenment.

Welcome to my kitchen and as you can see my kitchen table is cluttered with all the detritus of the everyday. Sorry it’s a bit messy but at least it’s a sign of life. Go for a roam over the different objects and they will come “alive”, including the TV, the teacup, the teapot, recipe cards and handyhints. Click on the TV and catch up with a two minute episode of The Adventures of Zsa Zsa Lahore, the ravenous, red blooded redhead on her escapades of looking for love, herself and the meaning of life. Download them to your mobile and you have a portable soap opera, excellent for amusing your friends.

Submit your own life/relationship worst moments for consideration and let me turn them into a two minute techno colour reality. Enjoying the dramalette characters so much? Click on the mobile phone and download my MMS’; hilarious 5 sec picture messages you can send to you friends. Eg. “You’re late”, “You’re dropped”, “You’re GORGARSE!”, “Mum says…stop downloading”. Like I say, let me do the talking. And of course, download a ring tone that’s bound to embarrass you in the bank queue, eg The Strangled Cat, Maniacal Laughter, Boo Hoo.

Emergence
Tagline: “Build Your Own Human Being”

Project description: ‘Emergence’ is an innovative cross-platform work in which users are given the chance to collectively build their ideal human being. Once genetic engineering has perfected the manipulation of physical characteristics, it will turn its sights onto the perfection of personality. But what sort of character traits would we want an ideal human being to have? ‘Emergence’ gives users the opportunity to answer these questions by working together to create their own version of an ideal being. The interactive audio-visual theatre component of ‘Emergence’ will premiere at the Sydney Opera House in mid-2007 and then tour nationally. At the same time, users will also be able to build their ideal beings online, in virtual environments and through the broadband TV platform.

Project description: ÜBERgroover.tv demystifies dance by introducing a group of everyday people to a diverse range of wild dances and drives their personal transformation to the ultimate rhythmic experience – natural ecstasy. ÜBERgroover.tv is the ultimate cross media experience: it is a TV series supported by mobile users and the online ÜBERgroover community which will inspire the creation of new dance forms and culminate in the design of Australia’s own ÜBERgroove.

Project description: Double The Fist is a high-octane special effects fuelled cross platform
comedy, experienced by weak and pathetic users around the world – via TV, Internet and any other mobile device that you can think of. This ironic celebration of lowbrow testosterone culture is dedicated to the self-improvement of millions of piss-weak punters around the globe, through the reckless endangerment of self and others. Steve Foxx and this team take weak everyday activities and transform them into Fistworthy challenges. Double the Fist is a global entity with a large fan base, aged between 15 and 35. They’re young, tech-savvy and desperate for more fistworthy content. We’re meeting their needs with an exciting expansion of the Fist brand into cross-media platforms, creating a space where they can engage with us and with each other inside the world of Fist.

Project description: AFTRS Media Lab is where the walls of the school disappear. An online resource and collaborative space, it invites you to move from passive consumption to active production and participation.

• As a repository of more than 30 years of the school’s productions, it is a valuable and fascinating source of the early works of many leading film, tv, radio and digital media makers, as well as the work of recent graduates. Users are invited to rate, tag and review.
• It is a window into the school: somewhere to keep up with what is happening right now, through blogs and podcasts, calendars and forums – and to comment and send feedback
• It is an educational resource: latest opinions, techniques and technology. Teaching activities of the school – seminars, interviews, exercises – are captured and uploaded.
• It is a place to show your work and receive feedback; get involved in media projects and meet like-minded people – where individuals, both within and outside the school, use online tools to share ideas and collaborate on projects
• It is where the school meets its audience and the audience becomes part of the school: online media projects, such as a serialised interactive drama that uses collaborative scripts and school production facilities; and rating and reviewing of student and community productions and scripts.

Diverse, slick, DIY media produced without the artifice of the 20th Century mediasphere. The Ministry of Truth is a libertine collective of over 50 media makers aggressively broadcasting from the Australian underground. We bring you attention deficit media across all platforms – free to air, web channel, mobile, download, DVD and file share. The Ministry reveals media’s banality by subverting the genre, serving up a chaotic blend of contrasting viewpoints and shying away from television that tastes as bland as a hospital dinner. July 2-7 Lab – submission deadline 2 June
LAMP is calling for creative teams of three to submit cross-platform projects for two more labs in July and October. In order to maximise the diversity and quality of the experience at the July 2-7 lab in Sydney we are accepting submissions from independent production teams for four places alongside four from AFTRS teams. You can download applications forms from the ‘Apply Now’ link

LAMP is accepting project applications from all parts of the Australian media industry. Apply for these labs if you would like to deliver your concept on mobile devices, advanced television, broadband, games consoles and beyond. We look forward to hearing from you for any queries regarding the next labs.

The next residential lab in Sydney will be within 1 hour of downtown. The application form can be downloaded here. To be aware of the types of projects that are strategically important to us please browse this website and look at the selection criteria on the application form. You will find the process illuminating, informative and transform the real-world focus for your ideas.

The Lab is subsidised by strategic sponsors and AFTRS. Accommodation, food, mentor, technical equipment and build developers and special events are all paid as part of your attendance but a $100 admin fee per person is required for external teams. The date for the lab will be Sunday 2 July to Friday 7 July 2006 – keep an eye on the website for location updates.
