LAMP alumni on a mission – Wild Ark
Just been contacted by Shoni Ellis who was on the 7th LAMP residential development lab with her project Wild Ark. This is a great project, worthy, locative, fun semi augmented reality project to introduce children in zoos to issues about environmental, conservation and animal protection issues. Since the residential Shoni has been awarded development grants and also mentored on and off by LAMP folk during 2008/9 and the guardian mentor on the original project was the always switched on Jennifer Wilson (now of the Project Factory).
But Shoni has been developing the project with gusto since then and has a great site with accompanying videos showing how the service works. She is entering the Mission Nova element (iPod touch game) into the App My State, a competition for Victorian (as in the state) Multi Platform creators to come up with ground breaking services - if you can we recommend you go to the Victorian Government $100 000 awards site and consider voting for it!

More about Wild Ark and Mission Nova below:
iPod touch Game
Mission Nova is a fun iPod touch game that enriches kids experience of the zoo and encourages them to engage more meaningfully with the animals they meet. Nova is a recently discovered planet and the zoo is launching an expedition to find out if it is habitable for Earth’s animals. Using iPod touches, students follow clues, uncover information and recruit animals to crew the spaceships that make up the expedition.
Online Community
The in-zoo game extends to Wild Ark, an online social community that fosters imaginative play and provides opportunities for kids to get their hands dirty and participate in real world conservation projects. Wild Ark offers a new model for education and interpretation design aimed at enriching and extending the zoo experience for kids.

Thanks for your great write-up Gary.
Unfortunately Mission Nova has been booted from the App My State competition!
I entered a video demo of Mission Nova in action instead of the actual game application because it better illustrates the Wild Ark experience.
By not including the actual game application my entry was considered ineligible. The competition website didn’t specify this was a requirement, so it wasn’t until my entry had already been removed, that I learned it had been disqualified!
A big thank you to everyone who voted and all those that tried…
Shoni
